Laboratory technicians in education system declare strike

Some 800 laboratory technicians in science education laboratories in schools throughout the country went on strike Wednesday morning.
The technicians protested a string of new reforms in the teaching of science subjects which they said were unilaterally imposed upon them.  Following attempts at a dialogue and negotiations between the Histadrut Engineers Union and the Education and Finance Ministries the decision was made to strike.
The laboratory technicians, who are mostly women, issued a statement Wednesday ahead of the strike and said that under the circumstances, they are overworked and underpaid and that their working conditions reflect a complete disregard for their safety.
Without the technicians students will be unable to complete bagruiot (matriculation exams) in the sciences.
"We are education employees, not slaves in the education system, enough of the cynical humiliation and exploitation," the laboratory technicians said in the statement.
