Lawyer expects verdict for Americans held in Iran

TEHRAN - A lawyer for three Americans charged with spying after they were arrested near Iran's border with Iraq said on Monday he expected the court to issue a verdict at the next hearing on Wednesday.

Shane Bauer, Josh Fattal and Sarah Shourd said they were hiking in Iraq when they were arrested by Iranian forces on July 31, 2009 and had not meant to cross the unmarked border.

For almost two years, the case has added to strains between Iran and the United States, already at loggerheads over the Islamic state's nuclear activities.

"I predict, if I can call it as a prediction, that the court will issue its verdicts," Masoud Shafie said in an interview.
