Rabbi Aharon Leib Shteinman, 104, the so-called “leader of the generation” and most senior rabbi in the Ashkenazi non-hassidic haredi (ultra-orthodox) community, was released from Maayanei Hayeshua Hospital in Bnei Brak on Sunday after a week in its intensive care unit.
Shteinman, who has been hospitalized several times this year, was admitted to the hospital last week after suffering from a fever and weakness. The rabbi is frail and finds it hard to speak because of pain in his throat. His associates and advisors maintain, however, that he remains mentally acute, although he now leaves decisions on new matters of public importance to other senior rabbis in the haredi leadership, such as Rabbi Gershon Edelstein, 94, and Rabbi Moshe Hillel Hirsch, 81.
