Lebanon: 12 al-Qaida men given life for bombings against UNIFIL

Lebanon has convicted and sentenced to life in prison 12 al-Qaida operatives for carrying out terror attacks, including using bombs to kill UNIFIL peacekeepers in southern Lebanon, a Lebanese military court official said on Thursday. The defendants, most of them Palestinians, are members of Fatah Islam group which battled Lebanese troops for three months in northern Lebanon in 2007. The official said that the defendants convicted late Wednesday were found guilty of carrying out bomb attacks in north and south Lebanon and establishing an armed gang with the aim of attacking people and weakening state authority. He spoke to The Associated Press Thursday on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.
