Maj.-Gen. Sami Turgerman issues written criticism following suspicion of 2 sexual harassment cases

IDF Southern Command chief Maj.-Gen. Sami Turgerman issued a written criticism to Givati Brigade commander Col. Ofer Winter after a battalion commander and a company commander in the brigade came under suspicion of sexually harassment in two separate Military Police investigations.

The written rebuke comes after Turgerman carried out a Regional Command-level query. He concluded that, while Winter did not conceal or distort the incidents while dealing with them, there was room for improvement in adhering to regulations in place for responding to allegations of sexual harassment.

IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz reviewed Turgerman's investigation, backed it, and said that in such incidents, military commanders must act according to accepted practice. He said the regulations should be refreshed in the IDF and that senior commanders must ensure that all officers are familiar with them.

Gantz also praised Winter's operational performance in general, and during Operation Protective Edge in Gaza in the summer. He added that he "does not doubt that the brigade will continue to form a significant part in the IDF's operational and leading force."

Gantz and Turgerman expressed their full confidence in the Givati Brigade and in Col. Winter's abilities.
