Majority of Russian air strikes still aimed at Syria opposition forces, UK's Hammond says

British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond on Wednesday said it was unacceptable that the majority of Russian air strikes in Syria continue to target opposition forces rather than Islamic State militants.

Russia, one of Syrian President Bashar Assad's staunchest allies, has launched a campaign of air strikes it says are aimed at Islamic State militants, but which also support Assad's forces.

"The majority of Russian air strikes continue to target Syrian opposition forces rather than Daesh," Hammond told parliament, using the Arabic term for Islamic State.

"It is unacceptable that Russian action is weakening the opposition and thus giving advantage to the very Daesh forces that they claim to be engaged against."
