MDA sends Red Cross generator to help after Cyprus blast

Magen David Adom sent on Thursday a special generator from its emergency stores to Cyprus to assist residents who were cut off from power by the explosion in the Cypriot navy base whose cause is still unknown.
MDA took the action after receiving a request from the International Red Cross for help. The explosion occurred on Monday, causing damage to the main power station on the island that in turn caused electricity supplies to fail and desalination -- the main source of the residents’ water supply -- to be halted.
The Red Cross’s headquarters in Cyprus was left without regular electricity supplies or the ability to help the people who were harmed. Radio, telephone and Internet connections were also cut off.
MDA director-general Eli Bin immediately instructed staffers to send an emergency generator to the island so the Red Cross there can function. MDA joined the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement five years ago as a fully fledged member, he said, and it has proven many times since then its solidarity with the international organization.
