Mental patients to have choice in where they will be hospitalized

In another few weeks, a new Health Ministry regulation that allows psychiatric patients to choose where they want to be hospitalized takes effect. The ministry said on Sunday that the regulation “will ensure as much as possible the balance between giving service according to medical considerations, offering satisfactory quality in a reasonable time and within a reasonable distance from his home and allowing the patient to choose where he will be treated.”

The ministry stated that if the occupancy rate in the psychiatric hospital the family requests is below 95 percent, the patient and his family will be able to choose where he will be hospitalized. Having the patient at an institution close to the family’s residence is considered important in the success of treatment.
