Merkel condemns theft of Dachau concentration camp sign

German Chancellor Angela Merkel condemned Tuesday the theft of the infamous iron sign atop the entrance to the Dachau concentration camp that reads "Arbeit mach Frei" (work sets you free).
The black wrought iron door with the Nazi slogan went missing on Sunday, according to state police.
Merkel, speaking at a ceremony in Berlin where she was awarded a prize by former prisoners of the camp, expressed hope that those behind the "appalling act" would quickly be brought to justice.
Merkel, according to AFP, talked about the importance of remembering the Holocaust, tying it to Germany's opposition to "extremism, anti-Semitism and racism."
