Merkel: Europe will not turn its back on Israel and US

Speaking at her acceptance of an honorary doctorate at Tel Aviv University Wednesday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel commented that "The situation is complicated. The building of settlements challenges Palestinian state-building." She added: "Europe will not turn its back on Israel or the United States."

Merkel spoke briefly on past peace negotiations, saying "Olmert and Livni conducted rather productive negotiations. There were elections, and the the two didn't make it. Such talks need to be continued as quickly as possible.

In her acceptance, she commented that "this is a great honor being here, in Tel Aviv, at this special moment."
