Ministerial c'tee revives pesticide legislation

Following the request of Environmental Protection Minister Avi Gabbay, the Interministeral Committee for Legislation elected to revive legislation regulating pesticide use that had passed its first reading during the previous Knesset. The bill will now be able to move on to second and third readings in the current Knesset, the ministry said.
Initially proposed by the Environment Ministry, the bill mandates that only operators who receive special licenses  would be able to partake in extermination works. The bill would also outline pesticides according to their environmental harm, with strong chemical substances only being used when necessary. In addition, the bill would expand the enforcement powers of the Environment Ministry, giving the office the authority to impose stricter sanctions, the ministry said.
