Ministers vote to keep biometric database

The Ministerial Committee for Legislation voted down a proposal to cancel the government's biometric database Sunday.
MK Nitzan Horowitz (Meretz) argued that a biometric database is not necessary for smart identification documents and that biometric information can be saved in passports and ID cards rather than storing millions of citizens' information in one place.
"It was already proven, time after time, that these databases can be broken into and lead to identity theft," Horowitz said. "I call on the Interior Minister to change directions, cancel the biometric database and provide smart identification without a harmful central database."
