MK Yishai calls for unity in face of divisiveness

MK Eli Yishai, who formed the Yachad Ha’am Itanu party, called for unity on Friday, a message he's often touted since leaving the ultra-Orthodox Shas party in mid-December.

Yishai, along with MK Yoni Chetboun, who quit Bayit Yehudi to join the new faction, toured the capital, paying a visit to the city's famed Mahane Yehuda open-air market.

During the tour, police personnel dispersed a group of young men – likely Shas and Arye Deri loyalists – who shouted “traitor” at Yishai, alluding to his decision to quit Shas, the party he served in for 30 years.

Unfazed, Yishai said that even though "the situation on the ground" is burning, "waves and waves of love" are washing over Yachad Ha’am Itanu. His party would not be deterred by hate and darkness – forces Yishai said would be countered with love and light.

"We will not complain about divisiveness…but work together" to rally the people,” he said. "Only together will we get the public behind us."

Chetboun said the party's message of unity could not be ignored and would hopefully come to fruition on Election Day.
