MKs to vote on continuing Protective Edge probe

The Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee's examination of Operation Protective Edge is likely to continue despite the Knesset's planned dispersal, senior coalition sources said Wednesday.
Coalition and Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee chairman Ze'ev Elkin (Likud) plans to request that the Knesset House Committee, led by his Likud ally MK Yariv Levin, authorize subcommittees to continue their work. The House Committee is expected to vote on the request on Monday, before the planned final vote on the Knesset's dispersal.
The Foreign Affairs and Defense subcommittees began reviewing decisions made in this summer's Gaza operation immediately after it ended, and Elkin planned to release an interim report in January.
MK Nachman Shai (Labor), opposed the probe from its inception, saying that a political committee shouldn't review decisions made by politicians.
"A professional committee should examine Operation Protective Edge, not a Knesset committee," Shai said Wednesday. "Just as I expected, the war isn't being investigated as it should be and that is very serious."
