Moderate quake hits Central California region

A moderate earthquake has jolted an inland desert area in Central California. The US Geological survey says the 4.7-magnitude quake struck just before 4 p.m. (2300 GMT) on Saturday. A preliminary report shows the quake was centered about seven miles southeast of Keeler, a small town in unincorporated Inyo County next to Owens Lake. Several calls to the Inyo County Sheriff's Department went unanswered. In Alaska, a minor earthquake struck near Fairbanks, jolting residents. The Alaska Earthquake Information Center says the 3.6 magnitude quake occurred at 5:30 a.m. (1230 GMT) Saturday, about 16 kilometers southwest of Fairbanks. There were no reports of damage.
