National Zoo in Washington throws birthday party for giant panda Bei Bei

The giant panda cub Bei Bei celebrated turning one on Saturday in a birthday bash thrown by the Chinese Embassy to the United States and the National Park in Washington, DC
At the ceremony, Chinese Ambassador Cui Tiankai addressed the media and visitors, calling Bei Bei's first year in the world the "fruit of collaboration and friendship between China and the US"
"I think it promotes and enhances friendship between our two peoples. And also a good example of our bilateral collaboration in saving the wild species," the ambassador said.
Then the traditional Chinese ceremony named "Zhuazhou" took place, during which Mei Xiang, the mother of Bei Bei, chose one item among three symbolic objects as a way of foretelling the future of the baby. She chose the banner with a Chinese red knot painted on it, which represents “friendship and luck.”
