Netanyahu appoints Avi Dichter deputy minister

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appointed Likud MK Avi Dichter as deputy defense minister on Wednesday.
Dichter will serve under Netanyahu, who has been defense minister since Yisrael Beytenu leader Avigdor Liberman quit last November. He thanked Netanyahu for entrusting him with the sensitive post.
“This is a challenging time for the security of the State of Israel, and I am happy to have the opportunity to add a brick to the wall of Israeli security,” Dichter wrote on Twitter.
Dichter, a former head of the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency), replaced Eli Ben-Dahan, who was not reelected to the legislature.
In the last two Knessets, Dichter headed the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. He was public security minister in the government of prime minister Ehud Olmert but has not been appointed a minister since he joined Likud.
Dichter is expected to be a future candidate to lead Likud.
