Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu congratulated German Chancellor Angela Merkel on her re-election during a phone call on Tuesday.
In a briefing on the call to ministers, Netanyahu said that Merkel is "a true friend to the State of Israel and the Jewish people" and a "great leader of Germany and Europe."
He added that Israel is confident that the special relationship between Germany and Israel will "continue to deepen and flourish" under her leadership.
Netanyahu said that Israel is worried about growing antisemitism on both the right and left of the political spectrum. Israel rejects any attempts to deny the Holocaust.
He said that Merkel plans to hold an intergovernmental meeting (which was postponed last year) shortly after she forms the German government.
Netanyahu added that he emphasized Israel's stance regarding Iran's attempts to establish itself in Syria.
