Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement Sunday that moving the US embassy in Tel Aviv to Jerusalem would only help the peace process progress.
Netanyahu made the comments following an interview with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who suggested Sunday that the Trump Administration may be wavering in its commitment to relocating the US mission to the capital.
"The transfer of the American Embassy to Jerusalem not only will not harm the peace process, but the opposite," the Prime Minister Office said. "It will advance (the process) by correcting a historic injustice and by smashing the Palestinian fantasy that Jerusalem is not the capital of Israel," it added.
Throughout the 2016 US presidential campaign, then candidate Donald Trump repeatedly stated that as president, he would take the unprecedented step of moving the American embassy currently located in Tel Aviv to Israel's capital in Jerusalem.
