New college dedicated to the humanities opens in Jerusalem

Shalem College, a new higher education institution specialized in the humanities and  inspired by the American liberal arts teaching method,  was inaugurated on Sunday evening, on its new  Kiryat Moriah campus in Jerusalem.
The  opening ceremony took place in the presence of several ministers, Israel Prize laureates, professors and the Shalem College inaugural class of 50 students. The institution is expected to host some 400 students in the future.
Among the subjects of study offered by the institution are Jewish thought, Greek philosophy, Islamic theology, Western history and modern Israel, among many others.
“I have a strong premonition that the opening day of Shalem College will earn a place of distinction in the history of Israel,” President of the new college, Martin Kramer wrote in a statement.
“Much work is behind us, but we are keenly aware that much, much more lies ahead of us,” Kramer added, “Today we want to share the sheer joy we feel at seeing students, eager and ready, filing into class. Shalem College has come alive. May it realize all our dreams, and give strength to Israel.”
