NGO: Recognizing Arabs tragedy doesn't undermine Israel's right to exist

An Israeli NGO dedicated to Jewish-Arab coexistence on Sunday issued a statement in response to a decision by the Ministerial Committee on Legislation to approve a bill that will make it illegal to mark Israel's Independence Day as a day of mourning. "Recognizing that the establishment of the state of Israel was accompanied by human tragedy does not undermine Israel's right to exist," the Abraham Fund Initiatives said in a statement issued on Sunday night. The organization said that Israeli society is mature and strong enough to be able to acknowledge the pain of its Arab citizens. "The refusal to acknowledge the Arab citizens' historic narrative will not make the issue less important to them and will make it harder to reconcile and build a joint future for Jews and Arabs in the state of Israel," the statement concluded.
