Obama says struggling over whether to intervene in Syria

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama saidhe has been wrestling with the question whether a US militaryintervention in Syria's 22-month-old civil war would helpresolve the bloody conflict or make things worse.

In a pair of interviews, Obama responded to critics who saythe United States has not been involved enough in Syria, wherethousands of people have been killed and millions displacedaccording to UN officials. Transcripts of both interviews werereleased on Sunday.

The United States has called on Syrian President Bashar Assad to step down, and has recognized an oppositioncoalition - but has stopped short of authorizing US arming ofrebels to overthrow Assad.
