OECD: Israel should improve inequalities in education among Arabs, haredim

Israel must reduce inequalities in education, especially among Arab and ultra-Orthodox students, in the upcoming year, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development said in a report released Monday.
The OECD identified “weak outcomes” in state education, especially among Arab students, while core secular subjects are “insufficiently taught in ultra-Orthodox schools.”
Israel has already invested in education in the Arab sector and has “further shrunk the gap” in terms of class sizes of primary schools during 2011-2013, the report said. It recommended that average class sizes be similar to the rest of the country.
State funding for ultra-Orthodox schools should be conditional on whether they teach the core curriculum, including mathematics, science and foreign languages, the report said.
