Oleh teachers to receive government grants

The ministries of Finance and Immigrant Absorption came to an agreement this week allowing for financial grants to immigrant teachers who have not been in Israel for sufficient time to qualify for retirement grants.

Those unable to pass the 25-year threshold for eligibility based solely on their Israeli experience, but have reached that total between their Israeli and American teaching careers with at least 10 years of that experience in Israel, will now receive an NIS 4,000 yearly stipend.

Instructors in English, math, science, and technological professions will all be entitled to the perseverance grant. “In my job as chairman of the [Knesset] Committee for Immigration Absorption and the Diaspora, many teachers have contacted me who felt discriminated against that they cannot enjoy this grant,” MK Yoel Razvozov (Yesh Atid) said in a statement.

“Lowering the barriers to immigrant teachers” is an “excellent incentive” to further immigration of experienced pedagogues, according to the legislator.
