One man dead, two police officers wounded in Arizona shooting

April- Police shot dead a gunman who had opened fire and wounded them at a Phoenix-area Walmart store on Saturday, local police said.

Both officers were listed in stable condition and one was in surgery, said Detective Seth Tyler of the Chandler Police Department.

Walmart had previously reported the suspect as a trespasser and called police again early Saturday morning, Tyler said. The officers likely would have arrested the man but he opened fire from just inside the store as soon as the officers arrived, he said.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene and the two officers, both of whom were wearing ballistic vests, were taken to hospital, Tyler said.

"They're stable. One's in surgery and we're keeping our fingers crossed that he's going to be OK. The second one, we're pretty confident he's going to be OK as well," Tyler said.

Police were withholding the identities of the officers and the shooter.
