Ophir Paz-Pines: The Knesset must stand behind the Iranian people

Labor MK Ophir Paz-Pines on Wednesday urged the Knesset to stand behind the Iranian people. "The world must get involved with what is happening in Iran. This is an extremist country threatening the entire world. And yet the citizens speak out, write and demonstrate. They risk their lives so the whole world will see what is happening, what atrocities the regime is committing against the people - and the world remains silent? Where is the United States? Where are the great democracies of Europe? The Knesset might say we stand by the Iranian people. These people deserve freedom of expression, democracy and affluence," he said in a statement. Pines added that he believed the Iranian nuclear threat will be less severe if the current regime collapses. Rejecting the view of intelligence officials like Mossad chief Meir Dagan, who said the policies of both leading Iranian candidates were similar, Pines said "[Opposition leader Mir Hossein] Mousavi is no [re-elected incumbent Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad. The masses would not take to the streets risking their lives if they were the same. I hope this civilian mutiny will bear fruit, that the ayatollahs' dark regime will fall and a real democracy will take hold of Iran. I believe the nuclear threat will diminish under a more moderate regime." The Knesset approved Pines' request to hold a special session devoted to the Iranian elections and will convene to discuss the subject next week.
