Chairman of the Central Election Commission Hanna Nasser said on Saturday evening that the rate of participation for Palestinians in the West Bank elections stood at 54.8 percent, Palestinian news agency WAFA reported.
The Palestinian Authority held elections for local councils on Saturday for the first time in six years.
Nasser said 277,000 out of the 505,600 eligible voters had cast ballots, putting the turnout at 54.8%. The percentages ranged between provinces, with the highest percentage in Salfit in Ramallah at 76.3%, and lowest in Hebron at 47.3%.
"The elections went very smoothly," WAFA quoted Nasser as saying.
