Palestinian municipal elections set for July 17

The Palestinian Authority government has announced plans to hold West Bank municipal elections on July 17.
It will be the first election in the Palestinian territories since Hamas wrested control of Gaza from Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in 2007, leaving the Western-backed president in control only of the West Bank.
Monday's Cabinet statement says elections would also be held in Gaza, but it's unlikely Hamas would agree.
The municipal elections are seen as a low-risk popularity test for Abbas' Fatah movement.
