President Shimon Peres on Tuesday said that both Jews and Arabs should be allowed to build homes in the capital, because "we want to live in peace and equality in Jerusalem."
Peres made the statement at a girls' high school in east Jerusalem's Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, where he was visiting together with Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat on the first day of the school year.
After hearing from the students about the difficulties they encounter due to the security checkpoints, the president and mayor said they would look into the matter.
"I will discuss with the security forces how we can ease your daily trip into Jerusalem. There used to be 41 checkpoints in the West Bank, and the IDF has removed 25 of them, improving the quality of life for the residents," the president said.
