Peres calls Polish president to ask for his help in overturning kosher slaughter ban

President Shimon Peres called on his Polish counterpart Bronislaw Komorowski to act toward legalizing kosher slaughter in the country, Army Radio reported on Saturday.
Peres called the Polish president on Friday, as the country's Jewish community was preparing to go to Poland's Constitutional High Court in efforts to overturn the ban on ritual slaughter.
Komorovski told Peres in response that he would act to ensure Poland's Jewish community was allowed to preserve its customs and tradition, according to Army Radio.
The ban on kosher slaughter went into effect in January as Poland's supreme court ruled that an exemption for religious Muslims and Jews in a law requiring the stunning of animals prior to slaughter was “unconstitutional.” Last month, the Polish parliament voted against a bill aimed at legalizing the practice.
