Peres promises to protect Channel 10, freedom of the press

President Shimon Peres met on Monday with representatives of Channel 10's management and workers, promising to protect Channel 10's interests as it is his obligation as the President of a democratic state to protect the freedom of the press.
"There is no true freedom of expression without a full, broad, and pluralistic press in Israel," he said.
The beleaguered Channel 10 has won a temporary reprieve on Monday when a ministerial committee approved a legislation that, if approved by the Knesset, will extend the channel's license. Experts in broadcasting and finance, however, say is merely a delaying tactic until the plug is pulled forever.
