Petah Tikva teenager retracts rape story

A 17-year-old girl who told a horrifying story of being dragged into a building site and repeatedly raped in Petah Tikva this week has told police that she made the story up, Sharon subdistrict police said.
The story caused a stir on Wednesday and was widely reported in the press. According to the girl’s claim, she was walking past a building site in the Em Hamoshavot neighborhood when a man who had been following her jumped on her and dragged her into a trailer, where he raped her.
Police said following questioning of the girl on Thursday, they determined that there was no reason to suspect a crime had been committed and they closed the case.
An official from the Sharon subdistrict said the case has been the cause of much aggravation for local police, who he said have spent the past year and a half working to restore a sense of security in Petah Tikva, only to see all that good work come crumbling down because of one story that was originally circulated on social media and became a major news item.
He added that once detectives took the girl to the scene of the crime they realized that her story didn’t add up and there was no case. He said that he doesn’t expect her to face charges for issuing a false police complaint, saying they’d prefer to move on.
