PMO: Netanyahu did not urge Obama to accept chemical weapons deal

Prime Minister's Office flatly denies Wall Street Journal report, which cites a phone call between the two men.

The Prime Minister's Office flatly denied reports on Monday that the prime minister had urged President Obama to accept Russia's proposal on Syria's chemical weapons.

Officials in the office said the words attributed to Netanyahu by the Wall Street Journal were never spoken.

A report surfaced earlier on Monday saying that Netanyahu had urged US President Barack Obama to accept Russia's offer that the Assad regime would destroy its chemical arsenal to avert an American military assault, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.

According to American and Middle Eastern sources, Netanyahu called Obama on September 11, and told the secretary of state he believed Russia was not bluffing that a deal was possible. Israel shares American concerns that strikes could strengthen rebels linked with al-Qaida and allow them to seize the Syrian regime's chemical weapons, Netanyahu told Obama.
