Police figures: Drop in murder rate over past 4 years

Despite the ongoing violence and shocking murder cases that have dominated headlines in recent weeks, police figures surprisingly show that the murder rate has been steadily dropping since 2005. Seventy two people were murdered in Israel from the start of 2009 until August 15. Seventy three murders were recorded during the same period in 2008. Seventy nine murders were recorded over the same time frame in 2007. In 2006, 92 people were murdered by August 15. The overall murder statistics paint made available to the Jerusalem Post on Tuesday paint a similar picture. In 2008, 122 people were murdered. While that represents a rise from 2007, during which 116 were murdered, the year 2006 saw 147 murders. In 2005, 162 people were murdered, while in 2004, 168 murders were recorded by police.
