Police grill Ramat Gan municipal officials over alleged corruption, ties to mob

Over 20 Ramat Gan municipality workers including a number of high-ranking officials were taken for questioning on Monday as part of an investigation into wide-scale corruption at city hall, including election fraud and ties to organized crime figures.

Police said that over the course of the year-long undercover investigation they managed to foil an attempt by organized crime figures to “penetrate” the municipality and become part of its operations.

The allegations include that people within the municipality offered jobs and other types of incentives to organized crime figures in exchange for helping the election of one of the mayoral candidates in the October 2013 municipal elections.

The investigation has been carried out by detectives from the national serious crimes unit LAHAV 433 and the Tax Authority and involves suspicions of election fraud, bribery, fraud, money laundering, and breach of trust.

A decision about whether or not to make arrests in the case will be made later on Monday, police said.
