Police probe deadly beating of Eritrean man in aftermath of Beersheba shooting

Police in the South are investigating the circumstances of Sunday's deadly mob assault which left an Eritrean national mortally injured in the immediate aftermath of the shooting attack in the Beersheba central bus station by a Beduin man.

The victim, who was later identified as Haptum Barhum, died of his injuries before dawn on Monday.

Barhum, an Eritrean refugee, was shot by a security guard, then beaten by an angry mob who mistook him to be an accomplice in a gruesome shooting attack on Sunday.

He was rushed to Soroka University Medical Center for treatment, but doctors pronounced him dead hours later.

The incident occurred after a terrorist armed with a pistol and a knife stormed the Beersheba central bus station on Sunday night, killing IDF soldier Sergeant Omri Levy, then snatching his rifle and shooting and wounding at least 10 Israelis before being shot dead by police.

During the attack, armed security personnel mistook Binsamo for a second terrorist and opened fire, wounding him in the lower body. The man was then set upon by a mob that mistook him for a terrorist, beating him severely and leaving him in serious condition.

Negev police said officers who arrived at the scene shortly after 7:30 p.m. shot one terrorist dead and then began sealing off the area and searching for other possible assailants.
