Polish president: Arab revolts like Europe's 1989

WARSAW, Poland— Poland's president on Friday compared the uprisings in the Arab world to the revolutions across Eastern Europe in 1989 that toppled communism.
President Bronislaw Komorowski said that the Western world has been taken by surprise by the revolts in Egypt and elsewhere in North Africa — just as it was 20 years when Poles and others overthrew repressive Soviet-backed regimes.
He said the West must now support the call for change in Arab societies and said he hopes Poland can serve as a model.
He also said he's glad European leaders are turning away from a mindset in which they thought of the Arab world "only from the point of view of two factors — economic interest tied to oil and gas and the fear of Arab immigration to Europe."
