Poll: Barkat leading Lion

Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat will easily beat his challenger Moshe Lion in the October 22 municipal elections, according to a Ma’agar Mohot poll published over the weekend in Ma’ariv and Makor Rishon. The poll of 990 residents of the capital representing a statistical sample of the population found that 44 percent of Jerusalem residents support Barkat compared to 13% for Lion. But 43% of the respondents were still undecided.
Barkat and Lion have been battling over the religious- Zionist population of Jerusalem, which Barkat won last election but Lion believes he can win because of his own affiliation with the community. The poll found that Lion would obtain votes from only 7% of the city’s religious Zionists, compared to 55% for Barkat. Among traditional voters, Barkat leads Lion 70-7%.
Lion, who is expected to receive the support of Shas, leads Barkat among haredim 26-13%, although the overwhelming majority of haredim are undecided in the race.
