Prison service to begin moving migrants to new Negev detention facility

The Israel Prison Service will beginoperating the new open detention facility for African migrants in theNegev on Thursday. The IPS reported Thursday morning that at 10amthey will begin moving 480 migrants currently held in nearbySaharonim prison to the facility.

The IPS said the list of which migrantsto move was compiled by the Interior Ministry, who gave them the listof names.

The move follows the passing by theKnesset of an ammendment to the anti-Infiltration law on Tuesday,which allows the state to hold people who illegally entered Israel toone year in the facility, which will be open in the day time andclosed at night.

Currently the facility has room for amaximum of 1,000 people and in the coming months will be expanded tohouse 3,300.
