Ambassador Prosor to UN: Condemn West Bank shooting attack

Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Ron Prosor on Saturday called on UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the UN Security Council to "unequivocally" condemn Friday's shooting attack in the West Bank, which left a 25-year-old Israeli dead and another injured.

Calling the shooting, which occurred near Ramallah, an "act of terror," Prosor urged the international body to "change the regular so-called balanced response that is calling on both sides to show restraint," as "only one side is responsible for this heinous murder."

Two Israelis were shot near the West Bank settlement of Dolev on Friday afternoon, some six kilometers west of Ramalla. The pair was approaching the Parsa Junction, when a Palestinian man, standing at the side of the road, asked them to pull over to ask a question. When they complied, the man produced a handgun, striking them both with 9-milliliter rounds.

"This terrorist," Prosor said in a letter written to the UN, "took advantage of the compassion of these young men to commit this heinous crime." The ambassador pinned the blame for the attack – "another in a chain of incidents" – on the Palestinian leadership, whom he said ignited violence by "constant incitement." Rather than directing "their people towards peace, [they] are leading the whole area into instability."

As for the international community, Prosor said they "should insist that the Palestinians prevent violence, and refrain from inciting emotions during" the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, which began this week.
