Railway workers to strike, but trains to run as usual

Israel Railways workers will launch another indefinite work stoppage Friday. Trains will run as scheduled, but all development and maintenance operations – including major upkeep work on the Haifa-Kiryat Motzkin-Nahariya line – will cease completely.
The strike was planned in coordination with the Histadrut labor federation. Avi Edri, the Histadrut official in charge of transportation affairs, said, “We’ve chosen to take these steps in a proportional manner and a way that won’t harm passengers. We call on the transportation minister and railways management to stop escalating the situation and return to the negotiating table.”
The work stoppage comes against the backdrop of the government’s plan to privatize Israel Railways, a project opposed by many of the rail carrier’s workers.
