Report: China overtakes US as #1 energy consumer

China is now the world's biggest energy consumer, having overtaken the US, which has held the position for over a century, reported the Wall Street Journal Monday.
The data came from the International Energy Agency, which said China used 2,252 million tons of oil-equivalent last year, about 4% more than the US. Oil-equivalent is a measure for total energy consumption in all its forms, including crude oil, nuclear, coal, natural gas and renewable sources such as hydropower, said the Wall Street Journal.
China was not expected to overtake the US in energy demand for another five years. The Wall Street Journal said the global recession, which has hit the US harder than China, was partly to blame.
Americans still spend about five times as much energy per-capita as the Chinese do.
