The deputy head of the Mossad announced his resignation from the position but not from the organization, Channel 2 news reported on Sunday night.
According to sources, the unnamed senior official's move followed Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's decision of last week to extend Mossad head Meir Dagan's term for anther year, until the end of 2010. The resigning figure was the organization's leading candidate to replace Dagan.
Another former deputy head of Mossad, Hagai Hadas, who has recently been appointed special envoy to Hamas-Egypt talks on the release of captive IDF soldier Gilad Schalit, left the organization in 2006 after clashes with Dagan.
