Report: Finance Ministry postpones haredi education reforms

Having already acquiesced to postponing cuts to some haredi study programs, Finance Minister Yair Lapid has reportedly postponed a series of additional reforms that he hopes will force the community into the labor market.

According to a report in Yediot Aharonoth, an amendment to the draft economic arrangements law postponed a requirement that fathers work at least ten hours a week in order to receive day care subsidies for their children. Instead of going into effect in the upcoming school year, the requirement will begin only in the autumn of 2014, but the requirement will grow to 28 hours a week by the 2017-2018 school year.

The report said the ministry also put off a program to install education quotas in haredi schools in order to allow the Finance and Education Ministries a year to run a formal assessment and build a national ultra-orthodox curriculum.

A clause tying property tax breaks to income levels would also be deferred.
