Report: Syria's Assad asked Liberman not to impede Alawite state

Syrian President Bashar Assad in 2012 reportedly asked a Syrian mediator to approach former foreign minister Avigdor Liberman and request that Israel not intervene in any attempts to form an Alawite state, a report on Monday from British daily The Guardian stated.
Assad's concern regarding Israel for any future Alawite state in Syria rallied around moving uprooted communities to territories on the Syrian Golan Heights.
According to the report, the Syrian government has been devising contingency plans for a rump state for the minority sect, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam - to which Assad belongs - in preparation for the possible collapse of the current regime.
