Reserve IDF officer jailed over leak to media

An IDF reserve officer has been sentenced to a week behind bars after being found guilty of leaking a sensitive discussion between former defense minister, Amir Peretz, and then IDF chief of staff, Dan Halutz, during the Second Lebanon War. Col. (res.) Hari El-Kaslasi, who served as an aide to the army secretary of Peretz in 2006, was sentenced by the IDF's Deputy Chief of Staff, Maj.-Gen. Dan Harel this week. According to Israel Radio, the media leak related to disagreements among senior IDF officers over army appointments. El-Kaslasi has admitted to the charges, but his attorney, Ilan Katz, said he was puzzled by the punishment, since the leak contained personal rather than security-related information. Katz added that punishments had usually taken the form of a rebuke in cases involving senior officers who leaked sensitive security information.
