Rivlin cancels Australia trip, to meet Putin in Russia instead

In light of recent developments in the region and Syria’s proximity to Israel, President Reuven Rivlin, following consultation with relevant authorities, will leave for Russia in March to meet with President Vladimir Putin.
Rivlin has said more than once that he doubts Syria can ever be a unified country again and that he is profoundly worried that once other involved countries leave the area, Israel will be left with the Iranians and Hezbollah on its doorstep.
The president was scheduled to travel to Hong Kong and Australia in March, but has postponed the trip. A date for the Russian visit has not yet been set, and will depend on Putin’s calendar.
