Rivlin cuts ex-prime minister Olmert's prison release conditions

President Reuven Rivlin decided on Monday to ease the conditions for former prime minister and convicted felon Ehud Olmert's early release from prison, removing some of the restrictions imposed on him.

Under those conditions, Rivlin's decision will become null if Olmert commits any further felonies in the next two months.

Convicted in 2009 of fraud and breach of trust, Olmert was sentenced to 27 months of imprisonment, but his sentence was commuted last week to allow his early release on July 2. The former Israeli leader had been working on a memoir that is to be published in the future.

Previous to his decision, Rivlin took notice of Olmert’s commitment to follow two conditions of his early release. These conditions have not been made public.

The president also commuted Olmert's sentence to equal the time he had already served in prison.
