Rivlin pardons tax evader from Mea She’arim

President Reuven Rivlin on Thursday decided to pardon tax evader Yoel Kraus of the capital’s Mea She’arim neighborhood.
Kraus, 44, a member of the fervently anti-Zionist Toldos Aharon Hassidic group and Eida Haredit communal organization, has served most of his five-month sentence, during which time his family was without a provider. His wife, Rachel, 43, is expecting their 17th child in the coming days.
Rivlin’s decision was taken on humanitarian grounds.
Kraus was imprisoned for operating a slaughter house and not paying taxes on his income. He received a relatively light sentence because the court understood that his tax evasion was not a matter of criminal intent, but of ideological persuasion in that he would not give part of his earnings to the Zionist state.
