Shalom: Israel cannot come to terms with a nuclear Iran

Israel cannot come to terms with a nuclear Iran, and any attempt to conduct dialogue to halt the Islamic republic's nuclear program will be a complete waste of time, Vice Premier Silvan Shalom said on Thursday. Speaking to foreign reporters, Shalom praised American attempts to engage Syria, but cautioned that such a move should be sincere, and should involve a Syrian effort to abandon its relationship with Iran, Hamas and Hizbullah, Israel Radio reported. Regarding negotiations with the Palestinians, the vice premier said that Israel was still waiting for the Palestinian Authority to take a strategic step and resume the economic and diplomatic negotiations with Jerusalem. While he said that he feared the economic talks might come at the expense of diplomatic negotiations, he maintained that both channels must be pursued at the same time.
